In the book referred to above a photo is shown of a woman of the Babar archipelago wearing an almost similar dish, suspending from her neck.

These dishes were clearly inspired by Sung and Ming dynasties porcelainous examples. For a darker gold colour saltpetre was used. The reddish residue on the surface is the result of applying tamarinde.
