The hilt shows an ancestor or mythical figure in a rather for Batak iconography unusual style which is reminiscent of Moluccan ancestor depiction. In his hands he holds en triangular leaf clamped to his breast. This leaf appears again on the reverse and encircles the animal head. An older layer of Indonesian ancestor iconography? The turban like headdress from which issues an animal head is unknown to me but refers possibly to a myth.
