Additional information

There are not many shields around hailing from the Batak. The present rare example of a round shield share some characteristics with the wooden shield in the Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam, inv. nr. TM-A-2766, which was acquired between 1854 and 1857. The inside shows an unusual depiction of an arthropod. The shield was most likely held in de hand by means of a string attached to the centre.
