Additional information
The ancestor figures from South Nias, carved in this naturalistic style reflect presumably the colonial context. Six ancestor figures in this style are known in public collections: Museum für Völkerkunde, Berlin; Museum Nasional, Jakarta; Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam; Museum Barbier-Mueller, Geneva; Wereldmuseum, Rotterdam and in the Collection of the Vereinigte Evangelische Mission, Wuppertal.Because of the congruency in style, these statues probably hail from the same workshop.
